The Elwood School System has one high school, one middle school, and two elementary schools (Oakland and Edgewood). The high school has approximately 600 students. Students at Elwood are given an opportunity to be a “Big Fish” in a small pond, allowing them a chance to excel in sports and extra curricular activities. The student to teacher ratio is much lower than in major school corporations improving the students’ likelihood of success in the classroom. Elwood is also home to the John Hinds Career Center, located near the high school, which offers opportunities for students to learn specialized trades and careers to further their education. (Read more about the Elwood School System) Elwood offers the great family values missing in many of today’s large cities. Residents of Elwood enjoy the wholesomeness, safety, and quality of life that a small town environment brings; yet they are still well connected to the surrounding urban areas via the major highways (SR 13, SR 37, SR 28). They stay up to date on community events with the assistance of the local newspaper, The Elwood Call-Leader. Mostly, the town of Elwood remembers what it means to be a community.
