The community of Elwood, in the northwest corner of Madison County, is home to approximately 9,700 people. Elwood offers the opportunity to avoid the cluster, stress, and hectic environment of the “Big City” while still being in close proximity to the professional services and major attractions of a large urban area. It also has its own local amenities, including a hospital, library, YMCA, multiple banks, a new city hall, fast food restaurants, a grocery store, and several churches. Moving to Elwood is a return to that “small town” feel you’re looking for to settle down and raise a family.

Students at Elwood are given an opportunity to be a “Big Fish” in a small pond, allowing them a chance to excel in sports and extra curricular activities. The student to teacher ratio is much lower than in major school corporations improving the students’ likelihood of success in the classroom. Elwood is also home to the John Hinds Career Center, located near the high school, which offers opportunities for students to learn specialized trades and careers to further their education. Elwood offers the great family values missing in many of today’s large cities. Residents of Elwood enjoy the wholesomeness, safety, and quality of life that a small town environment brings; yet they are still well connected to the surrounding urban areas via the major highways (SR 13, SR 37, SR 28). They stay up to date on community events with the assistance of the local newspaper, The Elwood Call-Leader. Mostly, the town of Elwood remembers what it means to be a community.
